Château Limestone Mantel with Rosette Frieze and Raised Hearth

Built in coursed blocks rather than a single lintel, with wheel rosettes and a foliate spray carved across the face and two enormous scrolled corbels holding the whole mass off the floor. The raised limestone hearth steps out twice into the room, so the fireplace becomes somewhere to stand as much as something to look at. Photographed in a walnut panelled room dressed for Christmas, the golden weathering of the stone sits perfectly against the timber.
